The Emerald Tablet of Hermes, also known as the Smaragdine Table (Tabula Smaragdina)
was completed by 813−33, and may have been written as early as 650.
The book is a compact and cryptic piece of the Hermetica reputed to contain the secret of
the prima materia (First Matter) and its transmutation. Considered to be the foundation of
the Western alchemical art and its Hermetic tradition, the book was highly regarded by
European alchemists.
The Emerald Tablet contains basic teachings of hermetic arts and the most famous
hermetic axiom – “As above, so below; as below, so above.”
